The takeover of MTT, based in Stone, Staffordshire, UK, allows Renishaw to add additive manufacturing technology to its product line.
With SLM (Selective Laser Melting) technology it is now possible to produce metal parts with complex geometry shapes that were once unthinkable.
The process consists of constructing a structure by superimposing successive layers of metallic powder that a computer-controlled laser selectively melts.
This process allows, for example, aerospace and motorsport companies to make parts lighter in a range of demanding applications.
The SLM helps reduce delivery times, eliminates tooling costs and reduces material loss, but above all, debriefs the imagination of designers. It is even possible to work previously unthinkable alloys such as aluminum iron.
