According to a study by market research firm IDTechExThe Wireless Mesh Networks (WSN) market for wireless sensors will grow from 450 M$ this year to 2 billion dollars in 2021. Because they are self-healing and self-organizing (rather like Ethernet Spanning Tree networks), WSNs are highly tolerant of failures and transmission hazards. Despite the size of the figures announced, they represent only a small part of the wireless sensor network market.
The applications of WSNs go far beyond the industrial market, since they will be used to monitor forest fires, avalanches and hurricanes, traffic, health, housing... and in a host of other applications, often impossible, difficult or too costly to implement until now. Despite its prospects, the market is somewhat hampered by the presence of too many proprietary solutions and too few standardized solutions (such as ZigBee). IDTechEx also points out that the absence of integrated global solutions is also a handicap to market development (there are a number of hardware products on the market, but their implementation requires software development).
