According to a study by market research firm IDTechEx, the market for wireless sensor networks WSN (Wireless Mesh Networks) will grow from $450 million this year to $2 billion in 2021. WSN networks are very tolerant of breakdowns and transmission hazards because they are self-healing and self-organized (a bit like the Ethernet Spanning Tree networks). Despite the size of the figures announced, they represent only a small part of the wireless sensor network market.
The applications of WSN networks far exceed the industrial market since they will be used for monitoring forest fires, avalanches and hurricanes, traffic, health, habitat... and in many other applications, often impossible, difficult or too expensive to carry out so far. Despite its prospects, the market is somewhat held back by the presence of too many proprietary solutions and too few standardized solutions (such as ZigBee). IDTechEx also points out that the lack of integrated global solutions is also a handicap to market development (there are quite a few hardware on the market but their implementation requires software development).
