The young Austrian company SensorDynamics (created in 2002), specialized in inertial sensors, has just passed the control of the American company Maxim, specialized in the manufacture of analog and mixed analog/digital integrated circuits.
This announcement is due to the huge growth that MEMS (microelectromecanical systems) sensors are expected to experience. These are used to carry out measurements of all types, including acceleration and rotation measures on three axes. Accelerometers and gyroscopes already find many applications in smartphones (where they are used, among other things, to detect the orientation of the device so that the image is always presented in the right direction) and game consoles (instrumented handles measure the movement of hands).
Maxim is taking its share of the pie from a market estimated by IHS iSuppli at $2.25 billion this year and called for an average annual growth of 22.5% between 2010 and 2015. The stakes are high since Maxim paid $160 million to get his hands on a company that has only a hundred people and achieved a turnover of 7.7 million euros last year...
