Four of the top six F1 manufacturers of the 2012 season, including three-time champion Red Bull Racing, ride with ANSYS solutionsThe unrivalled reliability of ANSYS simulations offers the few points that make the difference in the standings
As the 2012 Formula 1 racing season draws to a close, ANSYS is on the balance sheet. Once again, ANSYS can be congratulated for having participated in the success of the great winner of the F1 constructors' world championship, as has been the case every year since 2007. Four of the top six manufacturers of 2012, including champion Red Bull Racing, used his solutions. Red Bull Racing won this championship for the third year in a row, a feat that only two teams had achieved before.
When first and second place in the general classification are played at a few points, it is crucial for teams to take advantage of all the resources available to them to gain competitiveness. That's why team engineers such as Red Bull Racing use ANSYS' digital simulation technologies, which allow them to quickly develop exceptional racing cars.
Red Bull Racing uses ANSYS High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software for its aerodynamic testing. These tools leverage the computational capacity of thousands of computers to help engineers quickly evaluate many design iterations and make necessary changes before physical testing.
"ANSYS is very much part of our team as it has contributed to our victories in recent years," comments Nathan Sykes, Head of CFD Tools and End Elements Analysis at Red Bull Racing. "While speed is decisive on the track, it is just as decisive during the vehicle design phase. The relevance, reliability and accuracy of the results we achieve through ANSYS allow us to spend more time and money on simulation than on physical testing. These simulations allow us to base our design choices on solid observations, resulting in performance gains on the track. »
"We have been working with Red Bull Racing and other automotive leaders for several years now. This experience has allowed us to identify their needs precisely and to develop simulation practices that are reference in this sector," explains Sandeep Sovani, ANSYS' head of automotive strategy. "Knowing that the biggest automakers, whether race cars or touring, are able to design exceptional products with our technologies is the best reward."
Digital simulation is emulating F1 manufacturers and this trend is not about to reverse. Since 1999, teams using ANSYS solutions have earned nearly twice as many points at the World Manufacturers' Championship as those using technologies from competing suppliers.
