Wimesure and its partner SPECTRA-SYMBOL present the SoftPot, HotPot and ThinPot ultra-flat linear position sensors. These film displacement sensors (0.5mm thick) are based on widely-used potentiometer technology. Indeed, potentiometers are found in many everyday objects such as radios, stereos, joysticks and many variable voltage sources. As a reminder, a linear potentiometer is a resistor whose value varies proportionally to the distance between its terminals and the slider. Our pellicular sensors consist of a thin foil on which a high-impedance resistor is printed, and a sensor film with a low-impedance resistor track. The substrate and film are isolated by a separator. A mechanical slider enables contact between the resistor and the sensor. This is the classic potentiometer system, with the possibility of knowing the position of the slider at the point of contact between the two films.
Available in angular or linear versions, these potentiometric position sensors have a measurement range from 10 to 2400 mm in several ranges for linear displacements, and an outside diameter from 25 to 450 mm for angular sensors. With a very long service life (>1 million cycles), they have an IP65 protection rating. These displacement transducers are very easy to install, thanks to 3M adhesive.
The slider has no electrical contact with the plastic track (plastic film). We recommend a slider with a spherical shape and a diameter of between 1.5 and 3 mm. The material can be stainless steel, nylon, delrin or any other hard plastic. Contact force on the plastic track: 0.7 to 2.2 N, depending on operating temperature.
