Hexagon's Manufacturing Intelligence division and Altium have entered into a strategic partnership that will help optimize the environmental sustainability of electronic component design and manufacturing. The cooperation combines Hexagon's expertise in design, engineering, manufacturing and metrology data mining with Altium's strengths in printed circuit board development and the electronics supply chain. It aims to help companies better understand the impact of design decisions on the sustainability of electronics and smart products.

Virtually every industry is under greater pressure to reduce its carbon footprint and energy consumption, improve product recyclability, and meet numerous additional regulatory requirements. It is extremely difficult to introduce such changes in the electronics industry because of the complexity of operations, global supply chains and products. In this ecosystem, there are virtually no solutions for managing sustainability performance. Hexagon and Altium's partnership recognizes the electronics industry's significant impact on the environment and aims to initiate positive change by introducing new tools and solutions that help the sector become more responsible.

This cooperation will integrate the Nexus Hexagon and Altium 365 platforms to cover four key areas:

  1. Durability of the manufacturing process - Help manufacturers identify and integrate more responsible manufacturing processes and technologies that reduce waste and environmental impact through continuous improvement.
  2. Design for sustainability - Provide engineers with data-driven workflows that use advanced simulation-driven design, virtual prototyping, and quality control to create sustainable products with the right materials, design, and manufacturing processes.
  3. Stimulation of innovation - Cooperate with the market to develop new solutions that take into account the changing needs and challenges of today and tomorrow, for example, with Hexagon's Sixth Sense support program and start-up ecosystem.
  4. Solutions for businesses - Provide solutions that give the electronics industry the differentiation and intelligence needed to achieve more responsible innovation.

The partnership is extensive and includes developments planned for 2023 and beyond. It offers initial solutions that focus on reducing electronic scrap through carbon dioxide impact tracking and recyclability improvements achieved with Hexagon's digital reality platform and Altium 365 electronics design platform. This environment brings together PCB design, Mcad, data management and teamwork.

" IPC congratulates Altium and Hexagon on this partnership to maximize sustainability, says John Mitchell, President and CEO of the IPC Standards Development Group. "Combined with Hexagon's metrology and analytical capabilities, Altium's PCB design and supply chain skills reinforce the company's position as a leading authority on environmental responsibility in the electronics industry and a valued partner in IPC initiatives, including the soon-to-be-announced Sustainability Leadership Council. "

" Lustainability is a key management theme in almost all companies in the sector "Ted Pawela, director of ecosystems at Altium, observes. " Our partnership with Hexagon will help us improve tracking and documentation and, most importantly, optimize the sustainability metrics that our customers have to manage. We look forward to working with IPC and Hexagon to help make our business more responsible. "

" Sustainability is a high priority for Hexagon " says Parth Joshi, director of products and technology in Hexagon's Manufacturing Intelligence division. " We look forward to working with Altium and leveraging their electronics and IT expertise to provide more comprehensive solutions to our customers. Together, we have a vision to change the perception, implementation and adoption of sustainability in the electronics industry. We are committed to developing and integrating sustainability-driven manufacturing processes and providing access to digital technologies that will help our customers eliminate inefficiencies, reduce their carbon footprint and embrace a circular economy. "
