The first in an innovative line of high-performance X-ray CT systems offering improved levels of accuracy, resolution and scan speed

The VOXLS 40 C 450 is capable of inspecting, both internally and externally, parts of various sizes and densities, pushing the limits of what is possible in the fields of industry, inspection and control, and research. Whether it's a lithium-ion battery module or the cells within it, an additively manufactured part for the aerospace or automotive industries, or components for a Formula 1 carbon fiber chassis, all are eligible for nondestructive inspection (NDT) in the new system.

The VOXLS 40 C 450 features a one-piece cabin housing a metrology-grade granite-based manipulator combined with rigid steel towers and incorporating high-precision motors and encoders. The result is a structure that offers superior mechanical and thermal stability, more accurate manipulator positioning and therefore the generation of highly accurate and repeatable measurement data over the entire scan volume. The exterior of the equipment has been completely redesigned for a sleek, contemporary design that is immediately recognizable as a Nikon product, to fit perfectly into a state-of-the-art environment. A modern and intuitive touch screen interface allows easy configuration of the system to perform a wide range of quality control applications.

To give users the ability to inspect a wide variety of components, the system contains two microfocus X-ray sources designed and manufactured exclusively by Nikon. One source offers 450 kV capability to penetrate large or dense parts, while the other, 225 kV, will examine smaller or lower density components. Both sources are equipped with Nikon's innovative rotating target technology, offering ultra-high resolution at high power to quickly and easily identify even the smallest defects inside an object. The many acquisition modes of Nikon's CT system, including X.Tend (helical CT), Offset.CT, Panel Scan and Half.Turn CT, are all compatible with the VOXLS 40 C 450, offering even greater measurement volume, resolution and image quality!

IMBU X-ray and CT product manager Dr. Andrew Mathers said, " Based on proven features and technologies, the VOXLS 40 C 450 is an exceptionally versatile microfocus solution that has been designed in response to market trends and user feedback over the past several years. "

Both large and small objects, complex or not, can be inspected. The booth can accommodate assemblies up to 1,275 mm in diameter by 1,800 mm in height for the largest scanning capacity of any one-piece booth on the market at 800 mm in diameter by 1,415 mm in height. However, the versatility of the system allows for perfect adaptation to small part inspection at high resolution, making the equipment a true multi-application resource for R&D, failure analysis, first article inspection and quality control.

It is equally capable of high-speed, shop-floor, serial inspections, in part because the motorized radiation-safe doors are designed to open or close in six seconds. When combined with the integration of a robotic loader and the Nikon Automation OPC UAThe system is ready to automate high-speed closed-loop inspections in a Quality 4.0 production environment.

The ergonomics of the equipment make it particularly easy to set up and use. Operator-locked glass outer doors have been added to give the operator unparalleled visibility inside the enclosure for safe and accurate positioning of the object to be scanned, minimizing the risk of collision with the X-ray sources and detectors. Four internal video cameras provide an excellent view of the booth interior at all times, even with the doors closed.

In addition to the two X-ray sources, the system offers two types of detectors, a state-of-the-art flat detector with horizontal offset and Nikon's unique curved linear diode array (CLDA) detector. The first detector produces ultra-clear images for 3D CT or 2D digital radiography, while the second detector - linear - is ideal for 2D CT because it is particularly effective in filtering scattered radiation from high density materials scanned at high energy.

Nikon points out that the VOXLS 40 C 450 is only the first of a new generation of X-ray CT systems built in this form factor and includes: a one-piece booth, a metrologically designed manipulator, Nikon's unique microfocus X-ray sources, and a wide choice of acquisition modes and technologies. Future models will further expand the capabilities of the line to provide users with more options that will not only meet their immediate business and technical needs, but also help them identify new opportunities and increase operational efficiencies.
