Analog Devices, a specialist in analog high-tech, has joined forces with Jungo, publisher of driver and passenger compartment monitoring software, to develop a camera based on 2D infrared (IR) technology and time-of-flight (ToF) telemetry to monitor the driver and passenger compartment of motor vehicles. The combination of ADI's ToF technology and Jungo's CoDriver software will monitor driver and passenger drowsiness and distraction by observing head and body position, as well as gaze orientation. This solution should also enable intelligent interaction with the vehicle based on facial, body and hand gestures, and, using facial recognition, identify the occupants present in the cabin to enable them to access various functionalities: personalization of infotainment services, individualized services and car-sharing payment methods, for example.
"The collaboration between ADI and Jungo paves the way for the use of new, cutting-edge augmented reality applications, beyond the gesture control solutions we know today, said Vlad Bulavsky, Product Line Manager Automotive Connectivity & Sensing from Analog Devices. We are convinced that this collaboration will enable in-cabin sensing applications with driver and passenger monitoring using ToF telemetry to take the next step in improving automotive safety."
3D time-of-flight (ToF) detection technology is a light-based distance estimation and detection method (LIDAR- Light Imaging, Detection And Ranging) that uses high-power optical pulses lasting a few nanoseconds to capture depth information (usually over short distances) within a given scene. ADI markets products and solutions designed to directly improve the performance of 3D ToF systems (processing, laser drivers and power management), as well as development boards and software/firmware to accelerate the implementation of 3D time-of-flight measurement solutions.
Jungo's CoDriver software uses deep learning algorithms (deep learning), machine learning (machine learning) and computer vision (computer vision) to monitor driver behavior in real time via driver-facing cameras. It also drives comprehensive cabin sensing technology and functions such as occupant counting, seatbelt wearing detection, and detection or observation of critical medical conditions.
"The monitoring algorithms in our CoDriver software are used by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to ensure the safety of drivers and their passengers, as well as to develop innovative use cases that include passenger behavior on board a vehicleadded Ophir Herbst, CEO of Jungo Ltd. We are delighted to be working with Analog Devices to make vehicles smarter, while enabling OEMs to comply with current regulations and innovate their next-generation vehicles by combining our algorithms with ADI's time-of-flight telemetry technology."
