“New features and improvements keep Hexagon's new digital twinning software at the forefront of Industry 4.0 Smart Factory technology, increasing the quality of NC programs through automatic and predictive analysis , ” says Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence who announces the 2021 version of its NCSimul software.
NCSimul virtually builds the machining environment in a real context in order to avoid errors, reduce setup times and switch NC programs between different machines.
Version 2021 has a new comparison mode that detects excess material during a quick and hidden simulation. It offers a solid comparison between CAD / CAM models or between the previous stock model and the simulated model from NCSimul.
According to Philippe Legoupi, technical director, this new feature is the only way to detect the remaining material to be removed from a large part. This provides a list indicating the areas of the remaining material that can also be displayed in a 3D window linked to this list. Among the many benefits: detection of small missing drill holes on large aircraft parts and visualization of missing holes that need to be connected in mold bodies and hydraulic parts.
Integrated into NCDoc, the new sizing function allows the creation of control instructions for operators during the NC process. The function creates a checklist of dimensions with user-defined tolerances; it automatically defines the number of minimum measurements for each cutting part of the tool; it generates a detailed view for the programmer and the operator in the 3D simulation and it works with the NCDoc documentation model. A real saving in terms of time and costs, especially when using the wizard to create the exact number of measurements, even when a probing device is used on the machine.
A new set of options allows you to quickly assess the tools that can benefit from the air cutting optimization, with the “working times without material” indicated in the sequence list. A customization of the stock allowance is possible for each sequence. Security settings are automatically saved for future optimizations.
Improvements to fixture editing reduce simulation preparation times by merging clamps, parts and blanks, rearranging element positions, and creating a single stock (cylindrical, cuboid) ) around a room.
Numerous improvements to the interfaces for the management of turning assemblies for Esprit and TopSolid CAMs have seen the light of day: a new configuration interface file associated with each digital twin makes it possible to define the configuration of the positioning of the tool assemblies - number station, turret and orientation - between the CAM system and NCSimul. Interfaces can thus create NCSimul projects ready to launch simulations.
For turned parts, a simplified 2D view improves dynamic stock analysis. “This view quickly displays the tool and the path alongside the machined model and the reference part profiles , ” says Philippe Legoupi.

Concerning the simulation of the wear of the cutting tool as defined in the tool magazine, a button is used to launch the simulation for the tools whether they are 'completely' new 'or' 'worn'. User-defined values apply for each tool and the system can check if a worn tool can generate alarms or create collisions with the remaining material. This function defines the sharpening rules and reduces tool consumption.
