The additional production areas set up at Cernay, Alsace, enable us to increase capacity and improve work processes.
The market for high-end flowmeters continues to show strong growth. To keep pace, Endress+Hauser Flowtec AG has further expanded its plant in Cernay, Alsace. "With an additional 10,000 square meters of production space, we are consolidating the Cernay site on a long-term basis", emphasizes Managing Director Bernd-Josef Schäfer.
The world's leading manufacturer of flowmeters is now also producing vortex flowmeters at its Cernay site. The manufacture of electromagnetic flowmeters and their measuring tubes of up to 2.4 meters requires more and more space. "That's why we acquired a production workshop right next door to our site," explains Bernd-Josef Schäfer. A total of 4.2 million euros was invested in the purchase and conversion of the 9,000 square metre workshop.
To solve the space problems of an existing production line, an additional 1.2 million was invested in the construction of a new building of around 1,000 square meters. "Thanks to this new building, we can produce very large quantities and delimit our manufacturing processes more efficiently", explains Matthias Aschberger, Cernay plant manager. The new building has been equipped with special loading ramps for transport trucks.
The new Cernay production site opened its doors on October 23, 2015. It was solemnly inaugurated in the presence of Matthias Altendorf, Head of the Endress+Hauser Group, Klaus Endress, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Bernd-Josef Schäfer, Managing Director of Endress+Hauser Flowtec AG. Numerous representatives from politics and business attended the inauguration as guests of honor, including Mr. Daniel Mérignargues, Sous-Préfet of Thann-Guebwiller, Mr. Michel Sordi, Député-Maire of Cernay, Mr. Jean-Paul Omeyer, Vice-President of the Alsace Region, Mr. Raphaël Schellenberger, Conseiller Départemental of Haut-Rhin, Annick Lutenbacher, Conseiller Départementale of Haut-Rhin and Mr. Jean Rottner, Mayor of Mulhouse.
Steady growth since 1991
Demand for high-end flowmeters has remained constant for decades. The enormous quantities of liquids transported daily through pipelines have to be accurately recorded, measured and invoiced. Legal requirements in this field are becoming increasingly stringent all over the world. For this reason, Endress+Hauser had been considering a substantial expansion of its Cernay production facility for several years. The plant was set up in 1991 with 16 employees. Today, it employs over 360 people.
More efficient production processes
In addition to enlarging the production area, the company has also restructured a production line to increase its performance. Assembly processes are organized more rationally, and unnecessary transfers of materials between workstations are avoided. Expensive machinery and operating resources are now used more efficiently.
ESAT integration workshop
In Cernay, Endress+Hauser has already been working for many years with the ESAT integration workshop. ESAT workers perform tasks for external subcontractors, such as pre-assembly of small parts, prefabrication of housings and packaging. "Our experience has shown that disabled people deliver high-quality work," says Matthias Aschberger. For logistical reasons, these workstations are now integrated into the extended production process. "This significantly reduces journeys and increases the flexibility of work processes," says the plant manager. Every morning, up to twelve workers from the ESAT integration workshop take the bus to the Endress+Hauser production site in Cernay.
