With the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the world is entering a new technological era that will profoundly transform businesses and society. Through automation, voice recognition and machine learning, AI has already begun to revolutionize everyday business processes. Those who have already decided to invest in these technologies have a head start over their competitors.
But what about employees? For some, AI may be perceived as a danger to their jobs, while for others, it's an element that's leading them to rethink their responsibilities, to quickly adapt to this new technological transformation.
While it's difficult to predict exactly how AI will evolve, market specialists believe its adoption is faster than expected. The development of AI is accelerating, leading employees to question their skills.
Companies and their teams therefore need to grasp AI integrations and uses effectively. Infosys lists the 3 key factors for a fully successful adoption of AI in business:
- Involving employees
One of the positive and perhaps surprising effects of the arrival of AI is that companies are being forced to rely more on their employees. Implementing AI means investing not only in software and specific technologies, but also in training and skills development, to help employees make it their own. Companies can't bet everything on AI without planning a balanced investment between technology and people.
A recent study reveals that 76 % of decision-makers surveyed worldwide believe that AI is fundamental to the success of their business strategy. 80% of respondents believe they will have to reskill their employees whose roles are being or will be replaced by new technologies. This is why it is essential to reconsider not only the education system, but also skills development, in order to create the foundations for continuous learning and training. This will redefine the career prospects impacted by these disruptive new technologies.
- Learning to amplify human potential
This new way of learning is not only essential for employees, it's essential for future generations. We are developing and deploying AI systems that will become so sophisticated that they will be an integral part of every industry. This means training students, researchers and employees to acquire new skills and expertise to work with these new technologies.
Because within a few decades, AI could replace certain cognitive tasks such as problem identification and resolution. Today, AI has the ability to identify system anomalies that are imperceptible to humans. AI is therefore an additional help. But betting on AI replacing humans would be an exaggeration. Human creativity and ingenuity will always be needed for AI to find solutions to certain problems.
Opposing man and machine is no longer an issue, but rather a matter of working together to multiply human faculties tenfold.
- Educating future generations to think with AI
For humans to be able to handle AI with the utmost expertise and thus amplify its potential, education and training must be a priority. Digital literacy is fundamental for new generations. Every child needs to be taught computer skills. To this end, we need to open up new perspectives on learning offered by both governments and the private sector.
It also means rethinking training as a career-long process, and abandoning the memorization-based approach to learning in favor of a culture of curiosity and experimentation.
Teaching methods need to be reconsidered, to encourage research and more complex problem-solving. Companies must also provide employees with the resources for ongoing training. Finally, we should, for example, consider devoting a percentage of companies' annual revenues to retraining staff. Employees will be required to change functions ever more rapidly.
"This is a pivotal point in human history. As the next great technological evolution, AI is being built before our eyes, and we must be ready to evolve alongside it."says Monika Orlowska, Partner at Infosys Consulting.
