The European microwave industry will gather in Berlin for the 2023 edition of European Microwave Week (EuMW), from September 17 to 22, 2023. This year, Berlin is the place to be for all players in the microwave industry. European Microwave Week is Europe's leading annual event dedicated to microwave, radio frequency, radar and wireless technologies.
As a German test and measurement expert, Rohde & Schwarz is a leading global test and measurement specialist. Under the motto "From Gigahertz to Terahertz", the company will be exhibiting its solutions at the European Microwave Week exhibition from September 19 to 21. Visitors to the company's stand will be able to discover its latest solutions for testing microwave components, as well as those for automotive, aerospace and defense applications.
Test & measurement: pushing the limits of 6G
Rohde & Schwarz will focus on the growing range of innovative test solutions for 6G. Academia and key industry players consider that frequencies in the D-band (between 110 GHz and 170 GHz) can be used by 5th and 6th generation mobile communication systems (5G and 6G), as well as by future automotive radar and detection applications. To support early research into millimeter and sub-THz waves, Rohde & Schwarz is deploying a range of advanced RF test and measurement solutions that enable researchers to characterize now the components and circuits that will go into tomorrow's products.
The first public demonstration of a broadband D-band communications test solution is one of the highlights of the Rohde & Schwarz stand. It will feature the brand-new wideband IF vector signal generator from the R&S SFI100A series, which offers an RF modulation bandwidth of up to 10 GHz. Combined with the R&S FSW50 family of signal and spectrum analyzers, the easy-to-mount R&S FE170ST/SR TX/RX series front-ends and the new R&S NRP170TWG series thermal power probe for D-band measurements, this is an optimized test & measurement solution for early R&D work on 6G in the sub-THz frequency range.
Other demonstrations will showcase solutions configured for multiport measurements at W-band frequencies, featuring the new R&S FE110ST/SR TX/RX series front-ends, the R&S SMW200A family vector signal generator and the R&S RTP series oscilloscope. Covering a frequency range from 70 GHz to 110 GHz, these new front-ends complete the company's offering to meet the needs of high-frequency applications up to 110 GHz. Two further test configurations complete the range of D-band test applications. One involves the characterization of D-band components using the R&S ZNA series vector network analyzer in conjunction with the R&S ZC170 series millimeter-frequency converters. The other configuration shows how to measure D-band phase noise with the R&S FSWP family phase noise analyzer and R&S SMA100B series vector signal generator, combined with R&S FS-Z170 series harmonic mixers and R&S SMZ170 frequency multipliers, which extend the instrument's frequency band to 170 GHz.
The latest additions to Rohde & Schwarz's range of sub-THz test solutions (R&S SFI100A, R&S NRP170TWG and R&S FE110ST/SR) will soon be available. However, visitors to the show will already be able to discover them.
RF and microwave component testing
From design to characterization and production, Rohde & Schwarz offers a wide range of solutions to optimize the performance and guarantee the quality of RF and microwave components. At EuMW, Rohde & Schwarz will be presenting a test set-up that makes it easy to perform precise noise figure and gain measurements up to 110 GHz. These are key performance parameters of RF components. The system includes the new R&S FS-SNS110 intelligent noise source, combined with the R&S FSVA3000 signal and spectrum analyzer. For production testing of active and passive components, visitors will be able to discover a multi-port solution comprising the R&S ZNB26 series vector network analyzer and the R&S ZN-Z86 switching matrix with up to 24 outputs to optimize the test sequences of the DUT.
Test solutions for the next generation of speed cameras
Rohde & Schwarz also offers state-of-the-art solutions for automotive radar testing. These solutions offer unrivalled performance for simulating moving objects and characterizing the overall performance of radar sensors. At EuMW, visitors will be able to discover the R&S RTS series radar test system combined with the R&S AREG800A automotive radar echo generator used as a backend, and the R&S QAT100 antenna array used as a frontend. This solution incorporates new functions, making it the only test system capable of fully characterizing radar sensors and generating radar echoes from distant objects right down to the air-gap level of FMCW radars. This technically outstanding test solution is suitable for all development laboratories and HIL (hardware-in-the-loop) and VIL (vehicle-in-the-loop) test applications, as well as for validation and production test phases.
Air & Defense test solutions
Rohde & Schwarz has decades of experience in the aeronautics, defense and space sectors, and is constantly helping to advance technologies in these fields. Examples include new satellite constellations in low earth orbit (LEO), medium earth orbit (MEO) or geostationary orbit (GEO), and the integration of non-terrestrial networks (NTN) into terrestrial communications networks to provide uninterrupted connectivity, even in the most remote regions of the globe. Active antenna arrays with beam-forming capabilities are indispensable technologies for establishing links between satellite terminals and ground-based equipment. At EuMW, Rohde & Schwarz will be presenting a solution for testing these new satellite terminals. This solution is based on the R&S ATS1800C CATR test chamber, which enables OTA (over-the-air) measurements of antenna networks with large electrical beamforming. Other test solutions for the aerospace and defense sectors will be presented. These include the complete characterization of high-gain satellite receivers.
Real-time material analysis
The R&S QAR50 system uses microwave imaging technology that exploits hundreds of receive and transmit antennas to rapidly characterize materials. At EuMW, Rohde & Schwarz will be presenting its proven automotive radome tester in a new context. This tester is ideally suited for testing radomes and bumpers in both development and production, as well as for real-time material analysis of packaged products with the new R&S QAR50-K80 real-time imaging software. To detect quality problems such as leaks or unwanted particles, cameras, X-ray systems or scales are currently used. R&S QAR50-K80 real-time imaging software complements these conventional methods for analyzing packaged products.
Service and calibration in good hands
At EuMW, Rohde & Schwarz will also be highlighting its full range of services. Visitors will be able to find out about accredited calibration services, repair services carried out directly by Rohde & Schwarz, training and information on industrial perspectives provided by the R&S Technology Academy, the 24/7 hotline and on-site support. The Rohde & Schwarz support network spans the globe and several time zones.
