Created some ten years ago, the MIPI* Alliance has set itself the goal of driving the mobile equipment market by standardizing the interfaces between the major functions integrated into this equipment. The idea is to simplify design and reduce prices. To date, MIPI has standardized a serial bus (HSI) and interfaces for batteries, cameras and displays. The association, which now has 240 members, has just set up an informal group (Birds of a Feather, BoF) to look at ways of standardizing the interfaces of sensors integrated into mobile equipment.
The stakes are high when you consider that, according to a study by IHS iSuppliIn fact, almost 2.5 billion sensors will be integrated into mobile equipment (smartphones, tablets, GPS, cameras, games consoles, etc.) in 2013, compared with 1.1 billion in 2008. Most of these will be MEMS-type sensors (made from micromachined silicon).
