For nearly 3 years, teams at the Université François Rabelais de Tours have been working on the Fibratlas project, a virtual dissection of human brain fibers. The aim of this project is to create a "ground truth" for validating the results of algorithms for reconstructing brain fibers from MRI images. The researchers are carrying out a step-by-step dissection of both brain hemispheres. As dissection is a destructive process, it is necessary to keep a record of each step. Each dissection stage is acquired using the FARO ScanArm 3D scanner, and then re-aligned to a common reference frame. The neuroanatomist then virtually "replays" the dissection to identify the portions of the bundles visible on each digitized step. These portions are then used to reconstruct the entire fiber bundle. The results obtained are compared with the reconstruction of the same bundles from MRI images.
