German Carl Zeiss announces acquisition of US company Xradia specialist in 3D X-ray microscopes. Xradia will be renamed Carl Zeiss X-ray Microscopy.
X-ray microscopes from XRadia are used in research for advanced materials, geology and natural resources, semiconductor process optimization and life sciences.
Carl Zeiss is best known for its measuring machines of all kinds, but in recent years it has greatly expanded its range to include optical, electron, ion and X-ray microscopes. X-ray microscopes from Xradia will enable it to broaden its skills base while strengthening its positions on the other side of the Atlantic.
Carl Zeiss achieved sales of €4.16 billion in its last fiscal year (ended September 2012), with a workforce of 24,300. The "Microscopy" business accounted for €650 million.
