The rohde & schwarz technology group, a pioneer in future fields such as 6G and autonomous driving, will now also be active in the field of quantum computing. The acquisition on 1 July 2021 of Zurich Instruments AG, a technology leader in the field of testing and measurement, will enable Rohde & Schwarz to further develop its Test & Measurement division. The Swiss company Zurich Instruments AG will be managed as a wholly owned subsidiary.
According to Rohde &Schwarz, over the next few decades, quantum technologies will significantly shape the high-tech industry. And the potential for industry and research is enormous. "This is a future trend involving billions in government subsidies and industrial investment. Rohde & Schwarz is already active in the field of quantum sensing. With this acquisition, the company is now positioning its T&M solutions in quantum computing, one of the most promising technologies of the future in the world,"the company said.
Zurich Instruments offers state-of-the-art test and measurement systems to scientific and industrial research customers. The company has been at the forefront of science since its inception in 2008. A spin-off of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich), Zurich Instruments has grown steadily since then. The company has more than 100 employees in Zurich and regional offices in China, the United States, France, South Korea, Japan and Italy. In addition to quantum technology, Zurich Instruments has a strong network and extensive experience in academic research in physics.
Peter Riedel, President and COO of Rohde & Schwarz, explains: "We look forward to developing technology solutions for the future in collaboration with Zurich Instruments. We are also strengthening our position in the scientific field. Rohde & Schwarz and Zurich Instruments already share a passion for advancing science and innovation. »
The market for tests and measurements for quantum computing has enormous potential for both companies. The operation and maintenance of a quantum computer on a large scale requires many specific T&M solutions. Thanks to their complementary products, Rohde & Schwarz and Zurich Instruments will provide complete solutions in the future.
Dr Sadik Hafizovic, co-founder and CEO of Zurich Instruments, adds: "In Rohde & Schwarz, we have found a company that can give us access to the latest and best technologies. Rohde &Schwarz's size, stability and technological expertise provide optimal conditions for us to remain a leader in the growing quantum computing market and continue to grow as an independent subsidiary. »
For Zurich Instruments customers, the new configuration means an expanded offer, with innovative and ready-to-use products for locking amplifiers, impedance T&M instruments and quantum computing control systems. All functions of Zurich Instruments will remain in place, from development and production to marketing and sales.
