Emitech's EMCEM(ElectroMagnetic Characterization of Electrical Motor)test facility aims to characterize an electric vehicle motor from the point of view of electromagnetic compatibility. It is the result of the know-how of the various subsidiaries that make up the Emitech group. EMC, one of the operational arms, is working on current and future mobility solutions. His expertise in the design and validation of electric, hybrid and traditional powertrains has enabled the development of high-dynamic benches that simulate the entire powertrain as well as the road profiles necessary for the various design and validation stages. The second operational branch of the group corresponds to the various laboratories and engineering services who are dedicated to the qualification of equipment in relation to their life profile as expected or the approval of the equipment. Among the areas of expertise is THE CEM or electromagnetic compatibility. The synergies between this expertise have led to the new EMCEM testing medium, unique in Europe.

Embedded electronics and power electronics are two major components in the mobility sector. The electrification of powertrains is evolving rapidly and technical progress as well as environmental and economic issues are creating strong dynamics. This evolution is reflected in a strong demand for expertise and testing around electric motors for the automotive and aeronautics industries. The Emitech group supports it through numerous investments, including one dedicated to this state-of-the-art facility integrated into the Montigny Le Bretonneux automotive laboratory. The EMCEM installation allows the implementation of complete EMC test campaigns on high-power electric motors with direct coupling. The system makes it possible to characterize the CEM compatibility of an electric motor in operation, more precisely in the mode of operation that a customer wishes to explore. This characterization is there to ensure that in its different modes of operation, in low or high speed, this engine does not contribute to the deterioration of the electromagnetic environment characteristic of a vehicle and, conversely, that this same electromagnetic environment does not influence the expected operation of the engine and its control systems.

A unique test medium, entirely developed in-house

The installation is composed of a rotating engine bench made neutral and transparent from the POINT of CEM which is installed in a cage of Faraday automobile in accordance with the recommendations of the CISPR25 standard. The dynamometer is capable of reaching 21,000 rpm for 510 nm of torque.

Filtered feed is made available in the cage

Outside, a high-power battery simulator (250kW – 1000V max – 1000A max), a filtered acquisition bay, two 11 kW water/glycol and oil cooling groups for the thermal regulation of the engine tested, communication systems (CAN HS / FD / Flexray) between the control panel and the engine tested via optical converter are offered and complete the system, among other things.

Pulsar control and acquisition software, Pulsar Vibe vibration monitoring software and Emitech's dedicated CEM testing control system allow the laboratory to provide comprehensive supervision of key engine parameters in correlation with applied or measured CEM test parameters.

Julien Floch, CEM Engineer – Electrical – Lightning / BU R&D Innovations at Emitech, explains: "One of our challenges was to build a fully adaptive test area around the customer engine to be tested, whatever its dimensions, in order to respect the normative constraints. Our means makes it possible to test the different faces of a customer product on the shelf without the need for a turntable. The fact of being able to carry out tests on a rotating engine, lay down and on all its faces allows a better representativeness of the real case. »

An opening for the automotive and aeronautics markets

The high performance of the engine bench and the environment of the test area offer new prospects for test campaigns as described in the specifications of car manufacturers or equipment manufacturers. These levels of requirements are similar to those of aeronautics. This is why the EMCEM installation is also an asset for the future green aircraft that should take off in 2035. More broadly, this new bench is intended for all companies subject to these new NEEDS for CEM characterization of their electric motors.

This ambitious project benefits from the support of the State through its France Relance program and required an investment of €1.3 million as well as nine months of study and installation time. He mobilized the synergies of staff and resources in all areas of the Emitech group.
