Jean-Marc Aublant, delegate for European relations and standardization to the Director General of LNE (national metrology and testing laboratory), was elected on February 24 as chairman of the TC352 technical committee of CEN (European Committee for Standardization) , formed to develop standards on nanotechnology. Jean-Marc Aublant is in familiar territory because he was a member of the “Nanotechnologies” standardization group since its creation. He was also leader of the “Strategy Group” responsible for defining a normative work program for the European Commission.
The standardization committee, made up of around forty members representing around ten countries, works on three axes:
- a metrological axis, with the development of measurement and characterization protocols,
- a prevention and protection focus for the population and the environment against exposure to nanomaterials and nano-particles,
- an industrial axis aimed at developing “product” standards and specifications essential to manufacturers, importers and users of nano-manufactured products.
The program for the next three years is particularly busy since the objective is to publish 45 normative documents, of which 29 will be dealt with by these three working groups.
This nomination is recognition of the quality of LNE's work in nanotechnologies. It is one of the confirmed research organizations in this field, as evidenced by its participation in numerous European research programs, involving measurements of nanomagnetic materials (Nanospin), the development of roughness standards (Nanoref), study of the impact of nanoparticles on fire behavior (Nanofeu), the determination of the health effects of nanoparticles suspended in the air (Nanoaerosols), the development of biosensors making it possible to follow the behavior of molecules over time and this , for the purposes of patient follow-up or water monitoring, or even preparation for the implementation at its Trappes site of a nano-object characterization platform.
It should be remembered that the LNE , a public industrial and commercial establishment (EPIC) of 790 people, offers its expertise to all the economic players involved in the quality and safety of products. It is based on 5 professions: Research, Calibration and Consulting in metrology, Tests and analyzes, Certification and Training.
