Semiconductor manufacturers are increasingly involved in the production of sensors, attracted by the prospects offered by the massive integration of sensors into everyday objects (smartphones, GPS, remote controls, manual game controls, etc.). Linear Technologies has just provided a new example with the acquisition of the young company (it was created in 2002) American company Dust Networks, which has developed a wireless communication network technology for low consumption sensors. This is an interesting addition for Linear Technology, which has a significant offer in the measurement and acquisition of industrial data, as well as in energy recovery devices (in order to power sensors, without the use of batteries).
With this acquisition, Linear Technology focuses on professional applications, particularly MtoM (Machine to Machine) which involves monitoring and ordering remote equipment via the Internet (for example, to monitor the temperature of a premises). The arrival of self-powered wireless sensors, and therefore easy to install, opens up big prospects....
