There is a consensus that eventually the industrial Ethernet networks will replace the field buses. In terms of application development, the parallel of the historical evolution of the two types of networks is striking. Industrial ethernet (there are a good ten variants) is currently mainly used to interconnect large equipment (automates, supervisors, deported entry/exit blocks, speed dimmers)... a bit like the field buses in their early days. Then the field buses were used to connect smaller and smaller equipment, including sensors. Industrial Ethernet is coming, as evidenced by Emerson Process Management's announcement of an EtherNet/IP module (the industrial Ethernet proposed by Rockwell Automation)for its Coriolis Micro-Motion flow meters. This module incorporates a web browser to access configuration and diagnostic tools.
