The Swedish group Hexagon, best known for its activities in dimensional metrology and geolocation, ended 2012 with a turnover of 2.38 billion euros, up 5% on 2011. Net income increased by 20% to 357.4 million euros. The group is characterised by a frenzied policy of external growth. In 2012, 70.4 million euros were invested in MicroSurvey Software (Canada) and Lasertopo(Belgium) in January, Visava Oy (Finland) in April, my Virtual Reality Software AS (Norway) in May, Sematec (France) in September, Geosystems Kazakhstan in October, GTA Geoinformatik (Germany) and New River Kinematics (USA) in December. They are mostly small companies, with the group now relying on its own strengths: it invested 255 million euros in research and development in 2012, which should result in a significant renewal of the offer this year, and therefore good prospects in terms of turnover, announced Ola Rollén, CEO. Mr. Rollén adds that Hexagon is less subject to the vagaries of the economic situation than in the past because much of the revenue now comes from software revenues (e.g. upgrades).
Hexagon now employs 13,750 people and has three main activities: metrology (30.3%) geolocation (33.3%) technology (35.5%). The latter activity is quite disparate, with antennas for geolocation applications, subsets for satellite navigation systems, engineering and data analysis software, including geolocation (Intergraph and Sisgraphbrands).
Hexagon has a worldwide presence, with 41% of its sales in Europe and the Near East, 31.2% in America and 27% in Asia.
