CeA-Leti and the Lille-based start-up Menapic, which specializes in the characterization of thin films, have just concluded a joint development agreement on the application of Menapic's APiC (Acoustic Picosecond Colored) technology to material analysis. This technology is based on the principle of sonars but applied at the nano scale: a laser source is used to generate acoustic waves inside the different layers of the film (up to 10 layers). By analyzing the propagation of these waves, it is possible to characterize each layer, including its thickness (from a few nanometers to a few micrometers) and
its elastic properties.
