Thanks to research by scientists at the University of Leiden, it is now possible to measure the concentration of fine particles in the air with a mobile phone. Researchers have designed a plastic device, seemingly simple, that can attach to the camera lens of an iPhone. It allows to identify the "colors" of fine particles: from exhaust gases, industrial discharges or even from the incineration of waste, these change the composition of the colors of the day, each type of fine particles leaving a unique "footprint".
"The goal is to determine if these phones can make reliable measurements," explains Frans Snik, astronomer and head of the research group. "Our dream would be to develop a network on a European or even global scale."
