For fiber-reinforced composite materials, measurement specialist HBM offers fiber-optic measurement chains with long service life and low signal noise.
Particularly in the aerospace and automotive industries, the use of lightweight components based on fiber-reinforced composites considerably enhances performance. To help develop these composite products, HBM provides its customers with optical strain gages that are highly resistant in terms of elongation and service life.
To complete its range of optical strain gages, HBM also offers acquisition software. The user thus has the complete chain from a single source. Correctly installed, optical strain gages can withstand alternating loads of 10 million cycles and elongation levels of ± 5,000 µm/m.
For dynamic applications of 1,000 or 2,000 measurements per second, the signal noise floor is only 2 to 3 µm/m, while for static measurements this can be reduced by filtering to less than 1 µm/m. In addition to high resistance to alternating loads and nominal elongations of several thousand µm/m, the optical solution offers an extremely favorable signal-to-noise ratio.
The robustness of this technology avoids costly downtime. Many customers using composite materials therefore consider fiber optics to be an excellent alternative to conventional strain gages.
