Measurement specialist HBM offers long-life fibre-enhanced composite measuring chains for fibre-reinforced composite materials and a low-noise background signal.
Mainly in aeronautics and automotive, the use of lightweight components based on the use of fiber-reinforced composite materials significantly improves performance. To help develop these composite products, HBM provides its customers with optical gauges that show great resistance in terms of lengthening and lifespan.
To complement its "optical stress gauges" offer, HBM also offers acquisition software. The user then has the full chain of a single provider. Installed correctly, the optical gauges allow for alternating loads of 10 million cycles and ± 5,000 m/m lengthening levels.
For dynamic applications of 1000 or 2000 measurements per second, the background noise of the signal is only 2 to 3 m/m, whereas for static measurements, this noise can be reduced by filtering to less than 1 m/m. In addition to a high resistance to alternating loads and nominal lengthenings of several thousand m/m, the optical solution offers an extremely favorable signal/noise ratio.
The robustness of this technology avoids capital assets of facilities that can generate high costs. Many customers who use composite materials therefore see fibre optic technology as an excellent alternative to conventional stress gauges.
