My name is Thomas Smith and I am a test engineer at Fluke.
For me, one of the customer's expectations is not to have to over-spare the product.
In our lab, we spare nothing. Nothing comes out of our lab without being damaged in one way or another. We are trying to conduct real-world trials in addition to the sterile testing required.
We freeze the product, sprinkle it with water and drop it on its end, we do everything the user should not do with it.
A product can break down in different ways that we can't predict, except by testing it in the field.
Beyond the safety requirements, we require the product to work after all these tests, as we test it relentlessly until it breaks. We have to find the fragile points and decide on the margin we have, what is acceptable or not for the customer.
Will the customer be satisfied? The behaviour of a product is not known until it has been tested.
