Rockwell Automation's new FactoryTalk Analytics LogixAI module uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect production anomalies and alert operators so they can investigate the causes and intervene more quickly and effectively.
Many existing analysis technologies require in-depth expertise in both data science and industrial processes. This add-on module for ControlLogix controllers reduces this burden by doing the job of the data scientist.
It installs directly into the controller chassis and transmits controller data via the backplane to build predictive models. It can continuously monitor production operations and, after a learning phase, detect anomalies.
"The FactoryTalk Analytics LogixAI module makes predictive analytics more accessible so that more operators can make better production decisions, explains Jonathan Wise, Product Manager at Rockwell Automation. The module learns the operation of the ControlLogix application and alerts operators and technicians to unexpected variations. This enables them to anticipate product quality problems and protect process integrity."
For example, the module can help operators to spot deviations in the performance of machines such as mixers, which could affect product quality or lead to production stoppages. It can also act as a virtual sensor. The module eliminates the need for teams to take readings, such as the moisture content of a packaged food product, by analyzing variables from line equipment, such as sprayers, dehydrators and burners, to predict a measurement, virtually.
Teams can receive notifications of problems by configuring alarms on a human-machine interface (HMI) or dashboard. Future module functions will go even further, helping operators to solve problems or automate process optimization.
The FactoryTalk Analytics LogixAI module is the latest addition to Rockwell Automation's FactoryTalk Analytics range. This range includes FactoryTalk Analytics for Devices, which analyzes the structure of an automation system to signal problems affecting specific equipment. The LogixAI module goes a step further: it learns how an automation system's application works, making it easier to identify anomalies in the application as a whole.
