SGS France innovates with Draft Survey Tool. Created, manufactured and patented by SGS, this tool provides all stakeholders involved in the loading and unloading of bulk solids from ships at berth with reliable, objective and safe measurements. The Draft Survey Tool is available at all SGS France's major port facilities: Bassens, Bayonne, Dunkirk, Fos-sur-Mer, La Rochelle, Montoir-de-Bretagne, Rouen and Sète.
"It's a real revolution in draft survey techniques, enthuses Jean-Philippe Circal, Director Minerals Division of SGS France. Previously, gauging was carried out by visual inspection only. Inspectors would walk down the length of the boat's hull, at the draught marks, to establish the measurements. Using the Draft Survey Tool allows objective measurements, particularly in swell conditions, in complete safety for our inspectors."
With the Draft Survey ToolThe measurements are scientifically carried out using an ultrasonic technique. They are based on a differential reading between the draught (depth under water) and the air draught (space between the surface of the water and the freeboard mark on the boat). The device is capable of producing a measurement as close to reality as possible, even in rough seas.
"Using the Draft Survey Tool enables us to take reliable draught readings with a resolution of 5 mm. The device was validated over a period of almost two years in various countries, with several hundred comparative measurements. The Draft Survey Tool technique enables us to reduce the logistics costs passed on to our customers by 10 % overall, while increasing the accuracy and objectivity of our measurements".concludes Jean-Philippe Circal.
