Laser scanning technology for CMMs provides manufacturers with 70% faster inspection

Hexagon's Manufacturing Intelligence division has announced the launch of the HP-L-10.10, a contactless laser sensor for coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), which offers manufacturers the ability to perform dimensional measurements at a speed comparable to that of touch probing, and to control virtually any surface quickly.

Manufacturers using CMMs to measure critical parts have a habit of prioritizing accuracy over speed. The HP-L-10.10 sensor uses Hexagon's all-new cross-platform laser line scanning technology to deliver repeatability and performance similar to touch measurements running on the same CMM. In addition, it can measure 600,000 individual points per second with a probing form error of only 8 μm, quickly generating a complete high-resolution digital representation of a part, which is suitable for both surface control and detailed feature inspection. Although laser scanning is already possible on CMMs, the HP-L-10.10 is 7 times faster than its predecessor and ensures high-precision scanning.

The new sensor uses Hexagon's Shine (Systematic Intelligent Uncertainty Removal) technology, which allows almost any part surface or finish to be scanned with maximum speed and accuracy, without user intervention.

"We are convinced that the line laser scanner is revolutionary, as it combines speed, flexibility and precision without sacrificing one of these characteristics at the expense of another," explainsPatryk Wroclawski, Product Manager Laser & Non-Contact Triangulation. The HP-L-10.10 redefines what we can achieve with a single tool, so that our customers can exploit extended measurement data for treatments that exceed the quality of the final part. For example, they can be used for new product development or for continuous improvement. »

The HP-L-10.10 complements Hexagon's extensive offering of CMM sensor solutions, providing manufacturers with greater flexibility and assurance that their CMM has the widest range of measurement applications, from large sheet metal parts to complex vehicle electrical components. Available for the Global S high-productivity CMM range and the Global Advantage series.

Developed in close collaboration with CMMs, Hexagon's PC-DMIS inspection software allows users to automatically create efficient laser scanning trajectories by generating the scans and movements needed for measurement. The software can pick up a single scatter cloud with variable density during the same movement. It can be used for both surface inspection and detailed feature inspection. Users can easily see surface imperfections, making full use of the scanner's many features to identify quality issues to continuously improve the process.

When measuring large parts or remotely programming the CMM, usability is significantly improved thanks to a built-in Overview Camera (OVC), which provides a clear view of the work area, with guides visible on the part, indicating the measuring range. The visible guides help to signal to the quality technician an exceedance of the measurement range, making it easier to create routines and inspect with the PC-DMIS software. The overview camera also improves productivity and collaboration during the inspection, for example by photographing an out-of-tolerance part surface, so that the operator and his colleagues in the production unit can quickly locate the problem.
