With its cutting-edge solutions in the fields of test and measurement, technology systems, networks and cybersecurity, the Munich-based technology company Rohde & Schwarz is one of the pioneers of a safe, interconnected world. Founded more than 85 years ago, the group is a reliable partner for its private and public sector customers worldwide.
HandyScan 3D for Rohde & Schwarz's Teisnach plant
L'Teisnach plant is a systems supplier and mechanical/electronic manufacturing center within the Rohde & Schwarz factory network. Products manufactured here include body scanners, housings, printed circuit boards, TV and radio transmitters, customer-specific radio communication systems, precision micromechanical parts and special electromechanical fabrications of all kinds. As a contract manufacturer, manufacturing services are offered as part of a comprehensive service package ranging from product design and software development to after-sales support.
The measurement tasks are as diverse as the Teisnach plant, and range from quality control for in-house production to complete reverse engineering tasks for additive manufacturing.
A flexible measuring system was therefore required at Teisnach, not least to complement the in-house quality assurance service. The aim was to find a measurement tool that offered the greatest possible flexibility, both in terms of measurements and applications: quality control, measurement of vehicle interiors for adaptations, inspection of complex free-form surfaces and use in additive manufacturing. High accuracy had to be achieved at all times. In addition, inspection times had to be reduced, and the creation of 3D models had to be made simpler and faster.
Requirements also included measuring objects from the size of a 10 x 10 x 10 mm cube up to the geometry of a jeep, with a required accuracy of up to 25 µm.
The HandySCAN BLACK Elite from Creaform met all the measurement system requirements and was therefore integrated to complete the range of quality assurance services at Rohde & Schwarz, where other fixed tactile and optical measurement devices are already in use. The decisive factor in choosing Creaform's 3D scanning solution was the wide range of applications it could handle, in addition to the following features:
- Fast, ultra-precise capture of complex free-form surfaces and large components, plus rapid evaluation of scanned data. Thanks to non-contact scanning, highly sensitive and functional surfaces and contours are not damaged. This is sometimes the case with tactile measurements, as the probing ball comes into contact with the component; for example, the probing point is visible on gold-plated components.
- Digitizing of old or damaged stamping or injection molding tools for which no 3D model exists. Based on the digitized data, a CAD model can be created and the tools reproduced.
- Flexibility, precision and ease of use and handling
- Thanks to the high scanning speed, the engineering effort required to create data on vehicle interiors has been cut from one person-day to two person-hours.
Customer testimonial
The HandySCAN 3D is in regular use at the Teisnach plant. Operators carry out 3D measurements in the dedicated measurement room, directly on the shop floor for component inspections, and on customer sites.
" Thanks to the mobility and high precision of the HandySCAN BLACK Elite, we create added value for our customers that would not have been possible with existing equipment. The Creaform system can be used flexibly. For us, it represents a major improvement, particularly for the construction of special vehicles. For example, we can now quickly and accurately measure vehicle interiors for adaptive designs. What's more, the scanner enables us to efficiently inspect complex free-form surfaces. Creaform's service and support are also particularly noteworthy. Overall, we're very satisfied "says Josef König, Head of Quality Assurance/Control Techniques at Rohde & Schwarz's Teisnach plant.
