In partnership with Carboni and Metalli, Bercella is working on the creation of an innovative motorcycle using composite components and the HandySCAN 3D
In Italy, many companies have been created thanks to the dreams and visions of people convinced of their own ideas. In the early 1990s, Franco Bercella dreamed of being able to create an extremely light aircraft. He therefore sought to learn more about composite materials. But designing an airplane was not enough for him, he also wanted to build it. It was not a few details that would discourage Franco. For example when he decided to build the factory in which his ultralight aircraft would be made. The company was established in 1996 with the objective of improving the production of structures used in advanced applications. Currently, the main sectors of the company are automotive, aerospace, defense and rail transport. Over the years and thanks to a continuous research and development program, Bercella has acquired extensive experience in the production of structures based on composite materials and light alloys for the aerospace, defense and construction sectors. automotive industry, through the design of constantly evolving innovative solutions.
Thanks to the integration of these exclusive production capacities with an irreproachable design service, Bercella has become a solid and reliable partner with its customers.
The LUNAR project
A recent partnership with Carboni e Metalli , an innovative start-up from Parma, Italy, allowed the creation of the Lunar project: a motorcycle that combines composite materials produced by Bercella and metallic materials produced by additive manufacturing. For example, the fuel tank is made of carbon fibers: a demanding and laborious process, from the design of the model to the production of the mold, to the production of the final component.
From the start of the process, each step is subject to the strictest controls. Bercella has adopted a philosophy that could easily be defined as "the price of quality": it is more profitable to invest in quality controls during the production process, than to waste time and money. to rework a defective product or to see the customer return the components.
The model has been subjected to strict quality control requirements using Creaform's HandySCAN 3D . Before the model could be used to laminate the mold, its dimensions were checked and compared with the reference 3D model, using high-definition scan-to-CAD files. The same process was repeated with the mold, then with the final tank. In the end, this seemingly long and complex workflow saves time. With the assurance that each step of a component's production process is carried out according to the philosophy of "quality price", work between different partners is made easier.
Creaform 3D's HandySCAN 3D was the best option to quickly reproduce all of the components produced for the Lunar project. It is for this reason that Bercella has placed complete confidence in the HandySCAN 3D, an essential tool for their daily work processes.
Bercella used the HandySCAN 3D and VXelements for data acquisition . Not only does the HandySCAN 3D offer the best performance for fast and reliable analysis of components, but it also enables rapid importation into CAD programs. The simplicity of comparing the scan results and the geometry of the CAD model is an essential aspect in selecting the best inspection method. This feature has proven to be very important for many projects, when basic measurement techniques were not suitable or sufficient to obtain precise results.
Bercella also relies on a CMM and optical 3D scanner (using blue light technology). These two technologies, together with the HandySCAN 3D, can be used separately or together, depending on the specific needs of each project (for example: part size, precision required, various materials, etc.).
In recent years, rather than replacing the various systems and technologies, Bercella has integrated solutions that already exist in the company. This allowed for a more dynamic approach: in the event that several systems were not available, there is always a fallback solution. Creaform has become part of this scenario to strengthen the ability to meet the highest standards in the marketplace for customers and business alike.
Why choose Creaform technology?
The company, which needed a fast and precise tool to measure and control small and medium-sized components, evaluated a wide variety of solutions. Among these, Creaform has proven to be the most promising technology, thanks to its reliability and ease of use.
More specifically, the Lunar project involved parts with complex geometry, which required 3D reconstruction to verify dimensions, which other standard tools could not detect quickly and economically. The main goal of Bercella is to provide their customers with the peace of mind they expect. As the fact of guaranteeing the quality of the products, but also of all the controls carried out, in accordance with the requirements.
Apart from the fact that the HandySCAN 3D differs from its competitors by its portability and flexibility, it is also used by Bercella exclusively in a control room, where parameters, such as humidity and temperature are under constant control. . Thus, under any conditions, the components to be digitized are kept in a controlled environment. This is an internal requirement that Bercella has established for the control of all components, instruments, masks and molds. This also applies to production conditions, since composite elements are produced in clean rooms, where temperature, humidity and even air particles are controlled.
Creaform technologies to save time and money
Saving time also reduces lead times. The possibility of keeping components within the company and not passing them on to partners allows better control over production. In fact, inspections are carried out each time a component returns to the factory, which takes time and has repercussions on logistics and systems schedules.
Thanks to Creaform's technology, Bercella has increased its confidence levels in two important areas, control and production: faults or problems can be detected quickly, which helps to mitigate any risks in the best possible way.
Massimo Bercella, Sales Manager at Bercella, explains: “ We want to continue our collaboration with Creaform in the future. We firmly believe that it is possible to see the results of a partnership when the buyer / seller relationship is taken to the next level. We will always need reliable technology to control parts and components, which is why the support of a partner such as Creaform is essential ”.
