The LUNAR project
A recent partnership with Carboni e Metalli , an innovative start-up from Parma, Italy, allowed the creation of the Lunar project: a motorcycle that combines composite materials produced by Bercella and metallic materials produced by additive manufacturing. For example, the fuel tank is made of carbon fibers: a demanding and laborious process, from the design of the model to the production of the mold, to the production of the final component.
From the start of the process, each step is subject to the strictest controls. Bercella has adopted a philosophy that could easily be defined as "the price of quality": it is more profitable to invest in quality controls during the production process, than to waste time and money. to rework a defective product or to see the customer return the components.
The model has been subjected to strict quality control requirements using Creaform's HandySCAN 3D . Before the model could be used to laminate the mold, its dimensions were checked and compared with the reference 3D model, using high-definition scan-to-CAD files. The same process was repeated with the mold, then with the final tank. In the end, this seemingly long and complex workflow saves time. With the assurance that each step of a component's production process is carried out according to the philosophy of "quality price", work between different partners is made easier.
