Rapidly spreading viral diseases, such as the current Covid-19 pandemic, call for fast, reliable body temperature measurements based on infrared technology. But checking each person separately is often complicated and time-consuming. This is why Optris has launched a new system based on the current version of the PI 450i infrared camera, which has an optical resolution of 382 x 288 pixels. With the included PIX Connect software, this camera can measure the surface temperature of people's faces, even when they're just passing by. The new system can be used in two different configurations. Firstly, it can be used to determine the temperature of people in a crowd, or high temperatures can be monitored on an individual basis. The second method, according to Optris, gives more reliable results because the temperature can be measured on the outer corner of the eye, where it correlates most closely with human body temperature. For both configurations, Optris offers the appropriate optics to enable measurements to be taken from the optimum distance.
Reference heat emitter ensures high precision
The PI 450i infrared camera has a thermal sensitivity of 40 mK. To increase the absolute accuracy of temperature measurement, which is typically ±2°C for infrared cameras, the PI 450i can be used in conjunction with a reference radiation emitter. The BR 20AR radiation emitter is equipped with a high-precision internal temperature sensor. This reference signal is processed in the PIC Connect software. A total system accuracy of ±0.5°C can thus be achieved. Quick and easy to commission and configure, the software runs on all standard PCs.
For example, temperature thresholds can be defined, with an alarm triggered automatically if they are exceeded.
The new system can be used wherever non-contact monitoring of the body temperature of a large number of people is required to prevent the spread of the virus. In addition to airports and railway stations, hospitals, schools, offices, shopping malls, etc. are also possible places of use.
