Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence division launches the RS6 3D laser scanner, a flagship model for the new generation of Absolute Arm portable measuring arms, launched in 2018. This new laser delivers very high-density point cloud data with high accuracy and at high speed. According to Hexagon, the RS6 delivers unrivalled productivity gains compared with competing scanning solutions, thanks to the introduction of Shine - an advanced set of algorithms that enables the RS6 to measure with the highest degree of quality and accuracy without reducing laser scan line width or scanning frame rate.
The RS6 laser scanner features a medium-distance scan line width of 150 millimeters, offering over 30 % more surface coverage per scan movement than the previous generation of Absolute Arm laser scanners. The scanner also measures faster than its predecessor, with an image frequency three times higher (300 hertz). In other words, scanning can be carried out three times faster without loss of point cloud detail.
We often find that the prodigious acquisition speeds advertised for high-performance scanners are less extraordinary in the field, due to existing conditions and constraints," explains Anthony Vianna, Absolute Arm Systems Product Manager. With the RS6, we offer a scanner that doesn't disappoint the user in this respect. Our new Shine technology gives operators the ability to scan at full speed, with the maximum laser line width at any time and on any part."
According to the manufacturer, the new Shine technology makes the RS6 more powerful and easier to use than competing scanners. There's no need to learn numerous complex parameter combinations depending on accuracy requirements and surface type. "With Shine, the RS6 is always ready to scan any surface with maximum accuracy, without any reduction in frame rate, scan line width or data quality", says Hexagon.
Like the RS5 laser scanner, the RS6 can be completely disassembled from the measuring arm in a matter of seconds, for easy handling when scanning is not required. Thanks to its innovative, repeatable mounting system, it can be quickly reassembled, without recalibration, when scanning is again required. The RS6 also features a "one-of-a-kind" laser target grid to simplify measurement alignment. Combined with the numerous usability features integrated into the new generation of Absolute Arm models, the RS6 focuses on user-friendliness and scanning performance.
"This is a fascinating launch because the Absolute Arm's 7-axis scanning performance enters a new dimension without compromising usability," says Stephan Amann, Absolute Arm Business Unit Manager. Our aim was to offer a scanner that allows any user to measure without having to worry about settings. We want to offer excellent data quality to the user, whatever their experience."
The laser scanner can be ordered today through Hexagon's global distribution network, with delivery of the first units starting in August 2019. This laser scanner is available as a complete system with a new 7-axis Absolute Arm, or as a retrofit for the current generation of 7-arm Absolute Arm systems already in the field.
