R-Lab is a digital manufacturing center that helps artisans, artists, designers and architects who want to take advantage of a flexible, fast and affordable solution to manufacture their models, prototypes and products in small quantities. The aim is to support craftsmen by offering them a modern technological solution. R-Lab allows them to take advantage of an end-to-end robotic machining service to make objects. Based on 3D images, robots at the manufacturing center can machine and sculpt virtually any object in a wide variety of organic materials.

The design project

In recent months, R-Lab has collaborated with French artist and designer Hugo Drubay to prepare for the Design Parade 2019 festival, one of the most creative French interior design competitions. "Our role was to produce wooden furniture for Hugo's installation, called "An Indoor Garden," during the festival, which will take place from June 27 to 30, 2019, in France in Toulon. As part of the project, we produced a 3D-printed ceramic floor, a wooden bench and stool, using 3D scanning and 5-axis machining technology. To respect the concept of the project, with creations that seem to come from nature, we scanned real tree branches with the 3D Go scanner! Scan 3D from Creaform and with VXelements software (VXscan and VXmodel modules). The branches were then machined with a 5-axis St-uli robot," explains Romain Colnet, founder and CEO of R-Lab.

"This is one of the most powerful scanning technologies. It is very easy to use and our designer has been able to master the technology very quickly. Since we are part of the art and design industry, where small quantities are often discussed, the use of a powerful tool such as The Creaform 3D scanner is essential. We would not have been able to reproduce such realistic curves on the parts needed for the project. With the Go! SCAN 3D, we were able to meet 100% of the artist's requirements. With this successful project, we have entered the world of artistic competitions and made ourselves known to some of the greatest designers and artists in France. Creaform's 3D scanners add great value to our service offering. We see many applications for restoration work, digitization of works of art and personalization of objects," says Romain.

Automatech generierte Beschreibung Hugo Drubay won the National Furniture Award and his successful participation allowed R-LAB to become known to the greatest French designers such as Mathieu Lehanneur, Noé Duchaufour Lawrence and others. The project has also been mentioned in the online magazines Mobilier national and IDEAT.

The installation and furniture produced by R-LAB are on display in Toulon until the end of the summer. R-Lab plans to continue working with Hugo on future projects.
