Edmund Optics (EO), a global manufacturer and supplier of optical components, imaging and photonics technology, has announced the establishment of an in-house test laboratory for laser-induced damage testing. The ability to directly test the laser damage threshold of optical components facilitates both the inspection and verification of customer requirements for specific applications, as well as the development of processes for the manufacture of optical components with high laser damage thresholds.
The LIDT laboratory is equipped with a high-power Nd:YAG laser for testing optical components at wavelengths of 1064 nm, 532 nm, 355 nm and 266 nm, with pulse durations in the nanosecond range. Future investments in additional pulse durations and wavelengths are planned. The laboratory is led by Matthew Dabney, Senior Laser Engineer at Edmund Optics, who has over 30 years' experience in research into the interaction of lasers with different materials. He is the author of over 30 published papers on topics including pulsed laser deposition of novel transparent conducting oxides, laser nucleation and growth of silicon, the safe use of class 4 lasers in industrial environments, and the development of a robust LIDT test rig.
In addition to laser optics product testing and process development, LIDT's in-house laboratory also plays an important role in updating ISO 21254, the international standard for specifying laser-induced damage.
