White-light scanning technology combined with a portable measuring arm

Hexagon's Manufacturing Intelligence division launches the RS-Squared surface scanner for the Absolute Arm, combining for the first time a surface scanner with a portable measuring arm. Designed for very fast scanning of simple shapes and surfaces, the RS-Squared can measure parts faster than conventional laser scanners or other structured light scanners.

By combining the flexibility of a portable measuring arm with the speed of structured light scanning technology, the RS-Squared acquires up to four square "tiles" of 3D point data per second, maintaining the high measurement accuracy of the touch probe even in hard-to-reach areas. As the RS-Squared dispenses with reference markers or fringe projections made by other similar scanners, the time needed to scan the part is reduced to a minimum.

"With the RS-Squared, we want users of our solutions to be able to scan their parts as quickly as possible, says Anthony Vianna, Absolute Arm Product Manager. Not only does this reduce the time taken to scan the complete part, it also cuts set-up time. The fact that the RS-Squared is the first surface scanner to dispense with reference markers - referencing being carried out by the Absolute Arm - is a key factor in enabling users to carry out measurements with minimal downtime."

According to Hexagon, the RS-Squared surface scanner is "the ideal complement to the range of scanners, sensors and probes already available for Hexagon Absolute Arm measuring arms." It's a very high-speed solution, suitable for most large parts requiring lower resolution. Like the RS6 and RS5 laser scanner systems, the RS-Squared can easily be removed from the measuring arm at any time and replaced by another sensor or probe without recalibration.

In parallel with the launch of this new flagship scanner, Hexagon is introducing new Control Packs for the latest generation of Absolute Arm systems. The two new Control Packs offer full functionality with a single cable, helping to significantly reduce the number of wires on the shop floor. The high-performance Wireless Pack model also enables all Absolute Arm scanners, including the RS6 laser scanner and the new RS-Squared surface scanner, to perform high-speed wireless scanning, in combination with dual hot-swappable batteries that provide up to a day's autonomy.

The RS-Squared surface scanner is available as a complete system with a new 7-axis Absolute Arm, and as a retrofit with any current generation of systems. New orders for a complete Absolute Arm system will include one of the Control Packs.
