MEMS (Micro-ElectroMmechanical Systems) sensors, which integrate miniature electro-mechanical elements with electronics (often on the same chip), will experience an explosion in the automobile.
According to a study by ABI Research , their number will increase from 300 million in 2010 to more than 830 million in 2016. These fall into three broad categories: accelerometers, pressure sensors and gyroscopes.
The ABI study indicates that these sensors are primarily intended for safety systems, for air-bag, tire pressure control or stability applications. Between 2010 and 2016, these security systems will increase from 100 to 150 million, which means that the number of MEMS sensors per system will increase from 3 to 5.5 during this period. This increase is explained by the desire to improve the efficiency of security systems, which requires increased control, and therefore an increase in the number of sensors.
