MEMS (Micro-ElectroMmechanical Systems) sensors, which integrate miniature electro-mechanical elements with electronics (often on the same chip), are set to explode in the automotive industry.
According to a study by ABI ResearchTheir number will rise from 300 million in 2010 to over 830 million in 2016. These fall into three main categories: accelerometers, pressure sensors and gyroscopes.
The study ABI indicates that these sensors are primarily intended for safety systems, for applications such as airbags, tire pressure control or stability. Between 2010 and 2016, these safety systems will grow from 100 to 150 million, meaning that the number of MEMS sensors per system will increase from 3 to 5.5 during this period. This increase can be explained by the desire to improve the efficiency of safety systems, which requires greater control, and therefore an increase in the number of sensors.
