Guaranteeing the integrity of vaccines and the traceability of each unique dose thanks to visual inspection and serialization processes per vial: this is the commitment of Italian multinational Antares Vision, which has been based in Lyon, France, since 2016, using these processes to guarantee security and transparency throughout the vaccine distribution chain.
Eliminate the risk of human error and guarantee traceability at global level...
Today, Antares Vision's visual inspection and vial serialization solutions are used on the production lines of several well-known pharmaceutical companies in France and abroad.
Antares Vision systems can, for example :
- Eliminate the risk of human error in quality control, by being able to inspect large quantities of vials at up to 400 parts/min!
- Global traceability through product serialization and aggregation, which considerably reduces interruptions in the supply chain and ensures transparency - a key factor in this phase of the vaccine campaign.
Unit serialization and inline printing
Antares Vision's latest patented visual inspection solution features innovative technologies for accurate visual inspection of liquids and freeze-dried products, as well as container closure integrity testing.
"We can carry out unit serialization, in integrated mode, of each dose, including in-line printing and control of the datamatrix code with visible or UV-visible ink, to share information with health authorities at every stage of the supply chain," explains Nicolas Perrin, Director of subsidiary Antares Vision France.
Lyophilisats too!
The machine is also capable of performing a wide range of controls:
- Presence of particles inside the product ;
- Foreign body inspection ;
- Filling level checks ;
- Detection of surface and functional defects on the container;
- Label application and verification.
Visual inspection is carried out using state-of-the-art vision systems. Each high-resolution camera is programmed with algorithms to recognize specific defects in both containers and contents. Equipped with proprietary image processing hardware, the inspection machine provides precise statistical analysis to help identify the origin of rejection.
Thanks to the application of these high technologies, freeze-dried products can also be inspected. "Indeed, it is expected that the use of freeze-dried products will soon be adopted in the production of Covid-19 vaccines", says the company.
Vaccine integrity and transparency of the distribution chain
"The pandemic has accelerated the use and experience of new technologies, stresses Emidio Zorzella, CEO of Antares Vision. It's very important that people's safety is taken into account. Now, more than ever, technology must contribute to reducing the consequences of this health crisis. Our solutions contribute to the integrity of vaccines and the transparency of the distribution chain. With this in mind, we are exploring with IBM and the Linux Foundation, how information storage and transmission technology can be made more secure throughout the vaccine supply chain."
According to a World Economic Forum study conducted in 27 countries worldwide, only 74 % of people say they are ready to receive a Covid-19 vaccine, and 26 % say they are "not sure". The American research center Pew, meanwhile, found that 77 % of US citizens are concerned about the safety and efficacy of vaccines.
