Developed by British manufacturer Smiths Interconnect, and distributed exclusively in France by Cotelec, the new Galileo test socket makes a striking entry in the wide range of test sockets already offered by the French company.
At a time when IC development times are becoming shorter and faster, set-up, characterization and failure analysis activities need to be carried out quickly. The new Galileo test socket has been designed to meet these requirements.
Boasting a carefully thought-out new architecture, Galileo is an innovative, low-profile test socket offering outstanding electrical and mechanical performance to IC test customers in need of a cost-effective, fast solution.
Combining a universal interconnect elastomer material with advanced 3D manufacturing processes, Galileo is a test socket that can be produced in low volume and offers fast turnaround for a wide variety of IC test applications.
An innovative, discrete test socket designed to support the most demanding digital and RF applications, Galileo is a true high-performance solution for BGA, LGA, QFP, SOIC or QFN devices, with extremely short delivery times.
Proof of its effectiveness, the product was named Galileo ... simply in honor of the illustrious Italian physicist and engineer who made a significant contribution to speed studies.
A practical solution for many applications
On the practical side, using a unique set of "universal" elastomer contacts, Galileo can handle almost any standard package configuration, on any pitch (or pitches) to > 0.35 mm, in any configuration and with no additional tooling costs.
A single test socket can be reused in multiple slots and pad/ball locations. What's more, no contact alignment or registration holes are required in the PCB, enabling quick and easy integration on the board.
The new Galileo elastomer test socket is a patented, discrete contact ensuring high-speed signal integrity, and boasts first-rate features:
- Extremely short electrical paths for excellent signal integrity.
- Low inductance, high bandwidth > 40 GHz.
- High current capacity.
- Very high thermal conductivity.
- Field-replaceable contact sets with minimum tooling and technical expertise required.
- 3D printing technology for manufacturing socket bodies.
- Pre-stocked elastomers for short lead times.
- Soldering performance for applications where loss of signal integrity is not an option.
Thanks to its cutting-edge performance, the new Galileo test socket is ideal for a wide range of test applications, including the following:
- Characterization
- Failure analysis / RMA.
- Test bench
- System level test
