Developed by the English manufacturer Smiths Interconnect, and distributed exclusively on French territory by Cotelec, the new Galileo test socket makes a remarkable entry into the wide range of test sockets already offered by the French company.

As the development times of integrated circuits are increasingly short and accelerated, the activities of implementation, characterization and analysis of failures must be carried out quickly. The new Galileo test socket has therefore been designed to best meet these requirements.

Benefiting from a carefully thought out new architecture, Galileo is an innovative, low-profile test socket that delivers exceptional electrical and mechanical performance to customers in the IC testing industry who need a cost-effective and fast solution.

Combining a universal interconnection elastomer material with advanced 3D manufacturing processes, Galileo is a test socket that can be produced at low volume and offers fast turnaround time for a wide variety of IC test applications.

An innovative and discreet test socket designed to support the most advanced digital and RF applications, Galileo has the distinction of being a true high-performance solution for BGA, LGA, QFP, SOIC or QFN devices with extremely short delivery times.

Proof of its effectiveness, the product has been named Galileo ... simply in honor of the illustrious Italian physicist and engineer who made a significant contribution to speed studies.

A practical solution for many applications

On a practical level, using a unique set of "universal" elastomeric contacts, Galileo can support almost any standard enclosure configuration, on any step (or multiple steps) at > 0.35 mm, in any configuration and without additional tooling costs.

A single test socket can be reused on multiple locations and pad/ball slots. In addition, no contact alignment or registration hole is required in the PCB, allowing for quick and easy integration into the board.

A discreet and patented contact that ensures high-speed signal integrity, the new Galileo elastomer test socket has first-rate characteristics:

  • Extremely short electrical paths to provide excellent signal integrity.
  • Low inductance, high bandwidth > 40 GHz.
  • High current capacity.
  • Very high thermal conductivity.
  • Replaceable on-site contact sets with minimal tooling and technical expertise required.
  • 3D printing technology for the manufacture of socket bodies.
  • Pre-stored elastomers allowing very short lead times.
  • Welding performance for applications where loss of signal integrity is not an option.

Finally, thanks to its state-of-the-art performance, the new Galileo test socket can be advantageously used for many test applications, including the following cases:

  • Characterization
  • Failure Analysis / RMA.
  • Test bench
  • System-level testing
