CSA Group, a global specialist in testing, inspection and certification, has built its new European headquarters in the Bavarian town of Plattling (Germany), opting for test and measurement (T&M) equipment and amplifiers from Rohde & Schwarz.
CSA Group participates in the development of standards and offers testing, inspection and certification services in Europe and Asia, as well as in Canada and the USA. At the end of 2021, the Canadian company commissioned two state-of-the-art testing laboratories at its new European headquarters in Eastern Bavaria. Thanks to these new facilities, it is now able to offer its customers a complete range of services from a single platform located in the heart of Europe. Here, it can carry out a wide range of testing, inspection and certification services in several fields: electrical and functional safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), radio frequency, energy efficiency, environmental testing and explosion-proof testing. CSA Group is aiming to obtain numerous accreditations for this new testing facility: IECEx, IECEE CB Scheme and NRTL (Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory). It also intends to be recognized as a Notified Body in the European Union.
EMC and radio test chambers for equipment under test weighing up to 20 tons
CSA Group's European headquarters boasts two test chambers for EMC and radio measurements. The larger of these chambers will enable the testing of imposing equipment up to 4.2 meters wide and 4.8 meters high. It is equipped with an 8-meter-diameter turntable capable of supporting loads of up to 20 tons.
State-of-the-art T&M solutions from Rohde & Schwarz
The CSA Group has chosen Rohde & Schwarz test and measurement solutions and amplifiers to equip its two test chambers. The EMC test solutions can support all the most common standards used in the civil, military, automotive and aerospace markets, as well as the full range of ETSI and FCC standards for advanced electromagnetic and audio interference measurements.
Electromagnetic susceptibility measurements in the two test chambers are performed using R&S SMB100B series RF signal generators. These generators offer excellent spectral purity, very high output power and a wide range of features. They are combined with the R&S BBA150 series broadband amplifiers, which are designed to offer a very high level of availability and are considered to be the most advanced devices on the market. Power probes from the R&S NRP6AN family, specially designed for EMC measurement applications, complete the test set-up.
Rohde & Schwarz's receivers for measuring electromagnetic interference (EMI) are the most powerful on the market. The R&S ESW model, designed for certification testing and boasting excellent RF characteristics, stands out for the speed of its tests. It performs ultra-fast time-domain sweeps using FFT processing, as well as real-time spectral analysis. This makes it possible to study electromagnetic interference in detail. The test and measurement set-up also includes artificial antennae and power supply networks.
Rohde & Schwarz's test solutions, operated from the new Plattling facility, were commissioned this autumn. "We are proud to supply our T&M solutions to the test laboratory of such a renowned certification body as the CSA Group. We provide them with state-of-the-art EMC T&M solutions that support all the standards commonly used around the world. When many different tests have to be carried out on an object under test, this saves valuable time and considerably reduces costs".said Matthias Keller, Product Manager for EMC test equipment at Rohde & Schwarz in Munich.
"CSA's new European headquarters will house one of the largest EMC laboratories in Europe, explains Dieter Fröhlich, Managing Director of the CSA Group's Bavarian entity. The new laboratories meet all our customers' needs, providing them with the know-how of our electronics experts and state-of-the-art T&M equipment. Rohde & Schwarz has a solid worldwide reputation and decades of experience in the field of EMC measurements. That's why we chose its T&M solutions to equip our 10 m and 3 m EMC test chambers. Rohde & Schwarz provides us with the right solutions for our unique testing requirements. Future maintenance work will also be facilitated by the proximity of its Munich headquarters to our facilities."
