The Collège Français de Metrology has just published a book entitled "Application of the new concept of calibration of VIM 3". The book was written by a working group of the CFM composed of the following organizations: Arts and Crafts Paris Tech, ASPA, CEA/CESTA, CETIAT, CT2M, DELTA MU, LNE, PSA, TRESCAL, VOLVO POWERTRAIN.
The aim of this document is to help metrologists and users of measuring instruments understand the new definition of calibration introduced by the third edition of the Vocabular International Metrology (VIM) and to provide elements for its implementation within calibration laboratories.
In fact, this guide is an introduction to understanding the modeling of calibration results. It describes and illustrates modeling methods, provides elements, including statistics, to assess the parameters of a model and validate it. A methodology for the choice of modelling method is proposed based on the information available by the metrologist as well as the deliverables expected in a calibration certificate according to this new definition. This guide is illustrated by examples to better understand the methods and methodologies described and the concrete implications in the calibration processes of this new definition.
Finally, it should be noted that a calibration results modeling software called M-CARE was developed based on the methods recommended by the guide. Created with the support of the DGCIS (General Directorate of Competitiveness, Industry and Services), the software is available free of charge on the CFM website.
