The deployment of energy performance approaches around the world now enables the Afnor Group to deliver the results of an analysis of the practices of 78 certified organizations in France, Germany, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Russia and Morocco.
Less than a year after an initial study of French companies, the Afnor Group continues its analysis of energy performance approaches around the world. The new study provides positive conclusions about the use of the standard published nearly 4 years ago. ISO 50001 is increasingly being used by organizations: the latest ISO census shows a 40% increase in the number of ISO 50001 certificates worldwide between 2014 and 2013.
In practical terms, ISO 50001 provides companies with the keys to a collective approach to progress that allows them to quickly save money. Among the most cited triggers are obtaining certification, the need to save money through optimized energy management, the company's strategy or the existence of public financial incentives to get involved.
The need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is a trigger for two out of five institutions, and an important motivator for half of them. Valuing the company's image and external communication is not a trigger at this stage, but remains an important motivation for nearly three out of five establishments.
Among the benefits observed: 95% of companies see it as a tool to better identify areas of energy consumption and 75% as a lever to improve margins. 85% see it as a vehicle for progress over time and 76% as a lever for staff skills development. For more than two-thirds of the institutions surveyed, the budgets mobilized for the approach are considered to be negligible or low in terms of the benefits provided. A third of those who speak out on the issue have seen the results exceed their expectations. For almost all others, the financial benefits are in line with estimates.
Of the institutions that are mature enough to measure their energy savings, more than 50% report savings on their energy bill of between 5% and 30%.
