The Afnor Group's worldwide deployment of energy performance initiatives has enabled us to deliver the results of an analysis of the practices of 78 certified organizations in France, Germany, Taiwan, the UK, Russia and Morocco.
Less than a year after an initial survey of French companies, the Afnor Group is continuing its analysis of energy performance approaches around the world. The new study delivers positive conclusions on the use of the standard published almost 4 years ago. ISO 50001 is being used more and more by organizations: the latest census carried out by ISO reports a 40 % increase in the number of ISO 50001 certificates worldwide between 2014 and 2013*.
In concrete terms, the ISO 50001 standard provides companies with the keys to a collective approach to progress, enabling them to make rapid savings. Among the most frequently cited triggers are obtaining certification, the need to make savings through optimized energy management, company strategy, and the existence of public financial incentives to embark on the process.
The need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is a trigger for two out of five plants, and an important motivation for half of them. Enhancing the company's image and external communications are not a trigger at this stage, but remain an important motivation for almost three out of five establishments.
Among the benefits observed: 95 % of companies see it as a tool for better identifying areas of energy consumption, and 75 % as a lever for improving margins. 85 % perceive it as a vector for long-term progress, and 76 % as a lever for enhancing staff skills. For more than two-thirds of the plants questioned, the budgets mobilized for the approach are considered negligible or low in relation to the benefits provided. A third of those surveyed have seen the results exceed their expectations. For almost all the others, the financial benefits are in line with estimates.
Among plants that are sufficiently mature to measure their energy savings, more than 50 % declare a saving on their energy bill of between 5 and 30 %.
