Trexel and Teratonics announce the signing of an exclusive distribution agreement for Teratonics' non-destructive control solutions for the plastic injection moulding market. Marketed by Trexel under the TrexelVision brand, this breaking technology allows, for the first time on a production line, to perform dimensional control and detect defects inside molded plastic objects.

Controls non-destructive fast, simple and accurate
TrexelVISION is based on Teratonics' patented technology for online non-destructive testing. This terahertz rupture technology is ultra-fast, in addition to being contactless and safe because it is non-ionizing. TrexelVISION thus provides a solution for the control of the most demanding plastics products and manufacturing processes in the factory of the future. TrexelVISION can perform dimensional measurements, such as wall thickness measurements with micrometric precision, and detect defects in injection molded, compact or foamed parts. These defects may be, for example, bubbles, metal foreign objects, plastic inclusions, density variations, thickness variations or retassures.
New approach inspection inside the injection moulded parts
Trexel's expertise is based on a long experience of making moulded and foamed parts by plastic injection. Due to variations in pressure and temperature when filling mussels, these parts sometimes exhibit local variations in cell size and density. Until now, analysis of internal structures was only possible offline, often with destructive tests or with complex and dangerous methods. TrexelVISION analyzes the internal structure of parts online, on 100% of production, and facilitates the evaluation of process stability. In addition, this analysis can be used for molding compact parts to detect variations in loads, bubbles or other, which are generally not visible. TrexelVISION's online controls also detect variations in internal structure related to different process parameters and wall thickness control. This helps define process tolerances. TrexelVISION is also very effective in overmoulding applications, as the precise location of inserted objects can be determined using this technology.
TrexelVISION online or offline functionality
The TrexelVISION system incorporates a broadband source and a detection system in the spectral range 0.1 - 1 THz in which many common polymer materials have low or medium absorption. In addition to our terahertz rupture equipment, TrexelVISION includes a proprietary control and acquisition unit with proprietary software for scanning the part and processing the multitude of data derived from the measurement. Using a robot carrying the object to be analyzed, the system allows an automated and rapid scan of three-dimensional objects from their CAD files. Communication between the device and the robot can be adapted to many types of common robots used in injection molding plants, including state-of-the-art cobots. As a result, online control can often be carried out directly at the exit of the press to be injected with an existing extraction robot.
