Thanks to research by scientists at Leiden University, it is now possible to measure the concentration of fine particles in the air using a cell phone. The researchers have designed a seemingly simple plastic device that can be attached to the camera lens of an iPhone. The device can be used to identify the "colors" of fine particles: whether they come from exhaust gases, industrial waste or waste incineration, they change the composition of the day's colors, each type of fine particle leaving a unique "fingerprint".
"The aim is to determine whether these phones can make reliable measurements," explains Frans Snik, astronomer and head of the research group. "Our dream would be to develop a network on a European or even global scale."
